An hour and a half east of Lisbon, the landscape changes completely. Rolling golden plains, cork oak forests, olive groves and vineyards stretch to the horizon, broken only by whitewashed villages on hilltops. This is the Alentejo, Portugal's largest and quietest region — and at its heart is Évora, one of the most beautiful historic cities in the country.
Évora
The entire historic centre of Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and walking through it is like moving through two thousand years of history.
The Roman Temple
In the highest part of the city stand the columns of a Roman temple, remarkably preserved after nearly two millennia. It is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Portugal and the symbol of Évora.
The Cathedral
Évora's fortress-like cathedral is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Climb to the rooftop terraces for a view over the city's terracotta roofs and the plains beyond.
The Chapel of Bones
Inside the Church of São Francisco, the walls and columns of the Capela dos Ossos are lined with human bones and skulls — a striking and thought-provoking reminder of mortality, built by monks centuries ago. Unforgettable, and not for everyone; we will tell you what to expect.
Afternoon: choose your experience
Monsaraz
A tiny medieval village enclosed by walls on a hilltop near the Spanish border, with a castle and white houses along cobbled streets. Below it spreads the vast Alqueva lake. The view from the walls is one of the most peaceful in Portugal.
An Alentejo wine tasting
The Alentejo is one of Portugal's great wine regions, known especially for rich, sun-soaked reds. Visit a leading estate, walk among the vines and taste its wines — the perfect way to slow down before the drive back to Lisbon.
Tips for your Alentejo day
- Mind the heat in summer. The Alentejo is one of the hottest parts of Portugal in July and August. We plan the walking for the cooler morning.
- Spring is spectacular. From March to May, the plains are green and covered in wildflowers.
- Try the food. Alentejo cuisine is hearty and famous across Portugal — black pork, bread-based dishes and excellent cheeses.
- Wine tasting? Relax — you are not driving.
