For years, pilgrims arriving in Fátima on foot have asked for something like the famous Compostela of Santiago: an official record of their journey. In 2026, the Sanctuary of Fátima answered. It announced an official Pilgrim Certificate, to be presented on 12 October 2026.
What has been announced
- What it is: an official certificate from the Sanctuary recognising a pilgrim's spiritual and physical journey to Fátima.
- Why: the rector described it as a response to repeated requests from pilgrims, and part of an effort to promote pilgrimage and the spiritual routes to Fátima.
- When: public presentation on 12 October 2026, at the opening of the October anniversary pilgrimage.
- Criteria: when announced, the specific pilgrimage criteria were still being defined.
What we don't know yet
The minimum distance, whether you must walk or cycle, which routes count, and how you prove your journey had not been confirmed at the time of the announcement. We will update this article when the Sanctuary publishes the details.
How to prepare now
- Keep a record of your route: dates, towns you pass through, and stamps in a pilgrim credential if you carry one.
- Choose a recognised route. From Lisbon, the Caminho do Tejo is the classic way. Read our guide to walking from Lisbon to Fátima.
- Follow the Sanctuary's official channels for the final rules.
Being there when it is presented
The certificate's presentation coincides with the 12–13 October 2026 pilgrimage, one of the busiest weekends of the year in Fátima. If you are travelling from Lisbon, plan your transport early.
