Fátima is about 130 km north of Lisbon, close enough for a day trip. There are four ways to get there: the express bus, the train, driving yourself, or a private driver. Here is how they compare, including what changes on the busy pilgrimage days of May and October.
| Time | Cost | Door to door? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express bus | ≈ 1h20–1h40 | ≈ €4–15 per person | No — bus stations at both ends |
| Train + taxi | ≈ 1h + 25 min taxi | Train fare + ≈ €25–30 taxi | No — station 20 km from Fátima |
| Drive yourself | ≈ 1h15–1h30 | Car hire, fuel, ≈ €8 tolls each way | Yes, but you find parking |
| Private driver | ≈ 1h15–1h30 | Per vehicle; quote on request | Yes — hotel to Sanctuary |
By bus
Express buses are the most popular public option. Rede Expressos runs from the Sete Rios bus station (Jardim Zoológico metro, blue line) and FlixBus from Oriente (red line). Both arrive at Fátima's bus terminal, a short walk from the Sanctuary. There are many departures on weekdays and the ride takes around 1h20 to 1h40.
Good for: solo travellers and couples on a budget. Watch out: on 12–13 May and 12–13 October, buses fill up days in advance and return journeys late in the evening are limited.
By train
Trains from Lisbon Oriente reach the station called Fátima in about an hour, but the station is at Chão de Maçãs, about 20 km from the Sanctuary, with no reliable public connection. You will need a taxi, usually around €25–30 each way.
Good for: travellers who prefer trains and do not mind the extra taxi ride.
Driving yourself
The drive is simple: the A1 motorway north from Lisbon, exit for Fátima, around 1h15 to 1h30. Tolls are roughly €8 each way. There is plenty of free parking in Fátima on normal days.
Watch out: on the 13th of each month, and especially on pilgrimage weekends, parking fills early and roads around the Sanctuary are restricted. Staying for the candlelight procession means driving back to Lisbon late at night after a long day.
Private driver
With a private driver, you are collected at your hotel, dropped as close to the Sanctuary as traffic rules allow, and taken back to Lisbon whenever you are ready. The price is per vehicle, not per seat, so for families and groups the cost per person drops quickly.
- Families and older travellers: no stations, no stairs, no dragging luggage.
- Pilgrimage days: no fighting for bus seats or parking; we wait while you attend the ceremonies.
- Evening procession: be driven back to Lisbon after the candlelight procession, when public transport is scarce.
- More in one day: add Batalha, Nazaré or Óbidos on the way. See our one-day itinerary.
Which should you choose?
Travelling alone on an ordinary weekday? The bus is excellent value. Travelling as a family, with grandparents, as a group, or on a pilgrimage day? A private driver is usually the calmest option and, shared between several people, often costs less than you would expect. For groups of eight or more, see our group transport guide.
