Almost every visitor to Portugal travels between Lisbon and Porto, and most do it the same way: a train or a motorway drive of around three hours, straight through some of the most beautiful and historic parts of the country without stopping.
There is a better way. With a one-way private tour, you leave your Lisbon hotel after breakfast, choose two stops along the way, and arrive at your Porto hotel in the evening — having turned a travel day into one of the highlights of your trip. No luggage to drag onto trains, no rental car to return.
Choose your two stops
Coimbra
Portugal's historic university city, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old university on the hilltop, with its baroque library, is the centrepiece; below it, the medieval streets of the old town tumble down to the river.
Batalha
The Monastery of Batalha is one of the great Gothic buildings of Europe, built to celebrate a Portuguese victory in 1385 and now a UNESCO site. Its "Unfinished Chapels", open to the sky, are unforgettable.
Nazaré
A traditional fishing town with a long sandy beach and a clifftop viewpoint above it. In winter, it is famous worldwide for some of the largest surfable waves on Earth. Perfect for a seafood lunch by the sea.
Peniche
A rugged peninsula of cliffs, surf beaches and a historic fortress, with the island-like village of Baleal next door. A great choice for lovers of wild coastal scenery.
Aveiro
Often called the "Venice of Portugal", Aveiro is a city of canals, colourful moliceiro boats and Art Nouveau façades. Try the local sweet, ovos moles, before the final stretch to Porto.
Popular combinations
- History lovers: Batalha + Coimbra

Train vs private tour
| Train | Private tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Door to door | No — stations at both ends | Hotel to hotel |
| Luggage | You carry it | Stays in the car all day |
| Stops | None | Two curated stops |
| Best for | Solo travellers in a hurry | Couples, families, groups |
For a group of four to seven sharing a van, a private tour becomes surprisingly close in cost to several train tickets plus taxis at both ends — with a full day of sightseeing included.
