North of Lisbon, the Atlantic coast becomes wild and dramatic: high cliffs, huge beaches and some of the most powerful waves on the planet. A day trip to Nazaré and Peniche shows you the raw side of Portugal's coast — fishing traditions, fortress walls and ocean views that stop you in your tracks.
Nazaré
The town and the beach
Nazaré is a traditional fishing town set along a long, curving sandy beach. Wander the lower town, where you may still see fish drying in the sun on the seafront and older women in the traditional layered skirts the town is known for.
Sítio and the clifftop viewpoint
Above the beach, on the clifftop, sits the old quarter of Sítio, with a sweeping view over the town and the coast. It is the best panorama in Nazaré, and one of the best on the whole Portuguese coast.
The North Canyon and the giant waves
Just north of town, a lighthouse stands on a rocky headland above Praia do Norte. This is where the world's big-wave surfers come. An underwater canyon, one of the deepest in Europe, runs right up to the coast here and funnels the ocean's energy into enormous waves. On the right winter days, surfers ride walls of water the height of a building while crowds watch from the cliffs.
Peniche and Baleal
Peniche
Peniche sits on a rocky peninsula surrounded by the ocean. Its great fortress has a long and moving history — during Portugal's dictatorship it was a political prison, and today it tells that story. Around it, the cliffs and rock formations of Cabo Carvoeiro are spectacular, and the town is known for excellent fresh fish.
Baleal
Just next door, Baleal is a tiny island village joined to the mainland by a sandy isthmus, with beaches on both sides. It is one of Portugal's surf capitals and a beautiful, laid-back place to end the day.
When to go
- For the giant waves: roughly October to March, when big Atlantic swells arrive. The biggest days depend on the forecast, so they cannot be booked in advance — if you are flexible, tell us and we will watch the forecast for you.
- For beaches and sunshine: late spring to early autumn, when the coast is at its calmest and warmest.
- Any time of year, the cliffs, the views and the seafood are worth the trip.
Why go privately
Nazaré and Peniche are around an hour and a half from Lisbon, and connecting them by public transport eats up the day. With a private driver, you travel in comfort, stop at the viewpoints that buses skip, and choose your own lunch spot by the sea.
