Most visitors to Lisbon never cross the river to the south. They miss one of the most beautiful places in Portugal: the Arrábida Natural Park, where green limestone mountains plunge straight into water so clear and turquoise it looks more like the Mediterranean than the Atlantic.
It is less than an hour from the city, yet it feels like another world — and because the best viewpoints are along narrow mountain roads with little parking, it is a place made for a private driver.
What you will see
The mountain ridge road
The high road along the Serra da Arrábida is one of the most spectacular drives near Lisbon. On one side, the sea sparkles far below; on the other, the plains stretch inland. We stop at the best viewpoints for photos you will not believe were taken so close to a capital city.
The coves and beaches
Below the cliffs are hidden coves with fine sand and calm, clear water, sheltered from the Atlantic winds by the mountains. Portinho da Arrábida is the most famous, a small bay with a scatter of houses and boats that is often called one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal.
Azeitão
On the inland side of the mountains lies the village of Azeitão, known for two local treasures: its creamy sheep's cheese, queijo de Azeitão, and the sweet Moscatel wines of the Setúbal region. It is also a traditional centre of azulejo, the painted tiles found all over Portugal.
Add a tile workshop
Want to take a piece of Portugal home? Our Arrábida tour can include a hands-on azulejo workshop, where you paint your own traditional tile with a local artisan. It is a relaxed, creative hour — and the kind of souvenir that means something.
Tips for Arrábida
- Summer access is limited. In peak season, access to some beaches is restricted to protect the park and manage crowds. We know the rules and plan around them.
- Bring swimwear in the warm months — the water in the coves is some of the calmest near Lisbon.
- Great for a half day. At around three hours, it fits easily into a morning or afternoon.
