Just west of Lisbon, where the river meets the Atlantic, lies a stretch of coast that European royalty once chose for their summers. Today, Cascais and the wild beach of Guincho are the easiest escape from the city: sea air, dramatic cliffs and one of the most scenic drives in Portugal, all within half a day.
The route
Cascais
In the late 19th century, the Portuguese royal family began spending their summers in Cascais, and the aristocracy followed. The fishing village became an elegant resort, and it still has that feel: a polished marina, sandy bays, whitewashed streets and grand seaside villas. We give you time to stroll the old town and the waterfront at your own pace.
Boca do Inferno
A few minutes along the coast, the "Mouth of Hell" is a chasm in the cliffs where Atlantic waves crash into a collapsed sea cave. On a rough day, the spray shoots high into the air; on a calm one, the rock formations are just as striking.
The coastal road to Guincho
From Cascais, the road hugs the Atlantic, with the ocean on one side and the green hills of the Sintra mountains rising on the other. It is a drive worth doing slowly — and in a comfortable car with big windows, it is part of the experience, not just a way to get somewhere.
Guincho Beach
Guincho is the opposite of Cascais's sheltered bays: a wide, wild beach backed by dunes and exposed to the full force of the Atlantic wind. That wind makes it a world-famous spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Even if you do not go in the water, it is a stunning place to watch the waves and feel the scale of the ocean.
Tips for your coastal half-day
- Bring a windproof layer. Guincho earns its reputation; it is often much windier than Lisbon.
- Swimming is for experts. Guincho's currents can be strong. For a calmer swim, the bays in Cascais are better.
- Stay for lunch. The coast between Cascais and Guincho is known for seafood restaurants overlooking the ocean.
- Make it a full day. Add Sintra's palaces in the morning for the complete experience.
