If you only have a morning or an afternoon in Lisbon, spend it in Belém. This riverside district is where Portugal's explorers set sail in the 15th and 16th centuries, and where the wealth of those voyages was turned into some of the finest monuments in Europe. Everything is close together, but spread along the waterfront, with busy roads and railway lines in between — exactly where a private driver saves time and energy.
What you will see
Jerónimos Monastery
A UNESCO World Heritage site and the high point of the Manueline style, Portugal's own late-Gothic architecture. Look closely at the stone: ropes, coral, exotic plants and navigational instruments are carved everywhere, a celebration of the sea. Inside the church lies the tomb of Vasco da Gama, the navigator who opened the sea route to India.
Belém Tower
The small fortress that stood guard at the mouth of the Tagus is one of Lisbon's most recognisable images. Built in the early 16th century, it was the ceremonial gateway to the city for ships arriving from across the world.
Monument to the Discoveries
A huge stone prow on the riverfront, lined with figures of navigators, cartographers and monks, led by Prince Henry the Navigator. In front of it, a giant compass rose and world map are set into the pavement, tracing the routes of Portuguese explorers.
Pastéis de Belém
No visit is complete without them. The famous custard tarts have been baked a few steps from the monastery since the 19th century, from a recipe that is still a closely guarded secret. Eat them warm, with a dusting of cinnamon and icing sugar.
How to plan it
- Go early or late. Belém gets very busy in the middle of the day, especially at the monastery and the tart shop.
- Mind Mondays. Several Belém monuments close on Mondays, so check before you go — we plan around it.
- Skip the queue. Lines at Jerónimos can be long in high season; on our tours, entry is arranged in advance.
- Pair it well. Belém combines perfectly with an afternoon in Alfama or a sailboat ride on the Tagus.
Add a certified guide
Belém's monuments are beautiful on their own, but they make much more sense with the story behind them: why a small kingdom at the edge of Europe set out to map the world, and what it brought back. A certified guide turns a photo stop into the most memorable history lesson of your trip. A guide is optional on this tour, at +80€ per group.
Add a silver jewellery workshop
Belém's carved stone has inspired craftsmen for five centuries. Our Belém Art Walk and Silver Jewellery Workshop starts with about an hour around Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, photographing the details you like, and ends at the Ignis Jewellery studio in Benfica, where a jeweller guides you as you shape your own piece in silver clay, fired into .999 fine silver. 2.5 hours, small group of up to 4, no experience needed.
