Lisbon was built by and for the river. For centuries, the Tagus was the city's front door, and the best way to understand Lisbon is still to see it the way sailors first did: from the water, with the seven hills rising in front of you.
This tour combines both sides of the city. First, the old quarters on land; then a sailboat ride that shows you the whole panorama at once.
On land: Alfama and Baixa
We begin in Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, where narrow lanes and staircases wind below São Jorge Castle. Your driver takes you to the viewpoints at the top, so you can wander downhill through the district instead of climbing it.
Then down to Baixa, the elegant grid of streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and the great riverside square of Praça do Comércio. From here, it is a short drive to the docks.
On the water: the Tagus by sailboat
Once aboard, the city unfolds. From the river you see what is impossible to take in from the streets:
- The skyline of the old town, from the castle walls down to the waterfront.
- The 25 de Abril Bridge, the red suspension bridge that is Lisbon's signature, seen from below.
- The Cristo Rei statue watching over the city from the south bank.
- Belém's monuments along the shore, where the explorers once set sail.
The pace is slow and quiet — no engines roaring, just wind and water. It is the calmest hour of any trip to Lisbon, and for many of our guests the highlight.
When to go
- Late afternoon is magical: the light turns golden over the hills and the heat of the day fades.
- Spring to autumn offers the most reliable sailing weather, though Lisbon's mild climate makes the river pleasant much of the year.
- Bring a layer. Even on warm days, it is breezier and cooler on the water.
Perfect for special occasions
A private sailboat is a natural choice for anniversaries, proposals and family celebrations. If you are marking something special, tell us when you book — we can arrange a wine-tasting cruise with cheese and charcuterie, or time the sail for sunset.
