Every May, the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and one of the oldest in Europe, celebrates the end of the academic year with the Queima das Fitas, the burning of the ribbons. For a week the city belongs to its students, in black capes and the colours of their faculties.
Dates for 2027 are still to be confirmed. The festival takes place in May; the 2026 edition ran from 22 to 30 May. We will update this page when the Academic Association publishes the programme.
What happens
The week opens with the Serenata Monumental: at midnight, on the steps of the Old Cathedral, students sing Coimbra fado, a style sung only by men and traditionally in silence from the crowd, who answer with a flutter of capes instead of applause. It is one of the most moving moments of the Portuguese year.
The other highlight is the Cortejo, the parade of decorated floats through the city, when graduating students in top hats ride with their faculty colours. In between there are concerts every night, mostly for students.
