Every Christmas season, the walled town of Óbidos turns into Óbidos Vila Natal, a Christmas village for families set inside the medieval walls and around the castle. It usually opens at the end of November and runs into the first days of January.
Dates for 2026 are still to be confirmed. Previous editions have run from late November to early January. We will update this page as soon as the official programme is published.
What to expect
Each edition has its own theme, with lights, decorated streets, shows and activities for children, and a large Christmas area near the castle. Outside the event space, the town itself is the attraction: whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, narrow cobbled streets and a walk along the top of the walls. And of course a glass of ginjinha, the local cherry liqueur, served in a chocolate cup.
How to get there from Lisbon
Óbidos is about 85 km north of Lisbon, around one hour by car. On December weekends, parking outside the walls fills up quickly. A private driver drops you at the gate and waits, which is especially useful with children, pushchairs and shopping bags.
For families we usually suggest the van, for up to 7 guests, with child seats on request.
Suggested route
- Óbidos in the morning, before the crowds: the walls, the castle and Rua Direita.
- Vila Natal in the afternoon, when the lights come on.
- Or combine it with Nazaré and Alcobaça for a full day on the Silver Coast.
Good to know
- The Christmas village usually has an entrance fee; tickets are sold by the organisers.
- Weekdays are much calmer than weekends, especially in the week before Christmas.
- The cobbles are slippery when wet. Comfortable shoes make a difference.
