Every August, Silves, once the capital of the Moorish kingdom of the Algarve, holds its Medieval Fair. For about ten days, the streets below the red sandstone castle fill with knights, craftsmen, musicians and market stalls.
Dates for 2027 are still to be confirmed. The fair usually takes place in the first half of August. We will update this page when the programme is published.
What to expect
The historic centre becomes a medieval town: costumed performers, jousting and falconry shows, street theatre, traditional crafts and food cooked over open fires. The fair recalls the time when Silves, known as Xelb, was one of the most important cities of al-Andalus. The setting does the rest: the castle, the largest in the Algarve, and the cathedral beside it.
How to get there from Lisbon
Silves is about 250 km from Lisbon, around 2h30 by car, and about 20 minutes inland from Portimão. - August afternoons are very hot. The fair comes alive after sunset.
