Every July, the walled town of Óbidos goes back to the Middle Ages. The Mercado Medieval fills the area around the castle with costumed traders, taverns, jugglers, knights and music, for about ten days.
Dates for 2027 are still to be confirmed. The market usually runs in the second half of July; the 2026 edition ran from 16 to 26 July. We will update this page when the programme is published.
What to expect
The market takes over the slopes below the castle walls: traders and craftsmen in period dress, food cooked over open fires, wine and mead served in clay cups, and shows throughout the day. The best-known moment is the assault on the castle, a reenactment of the siege. There is an area for children, and educational sessions on medieval life and food.
Outside the market, Óbidos is worth the visit on its own: the walk along the top of the walls, Rua Direita and a glass of ginjinha in a chocolate cup.
How to get there from Lisbon
Óbidos is about 85 km north of Lisbon, around one hour by car. Summer evenings are the liveliest time at the market, and parking outside the walls fills quickly. A private driver drops you at the gate and collects you when you are ready, even late.
