Torres Vedras, less than an hour north of Lisbon, holds what it proudly calls the most Portuguese carnival in Portugal. In 2027 the carnival falls between Friday 5 and Tuesday 9 February, with Carnival Tuesday on the 9th.
Why it is different
There are no samba schools here. Torres Vedras carnival is satirical, improvised and deeply local. Giant cardboard figures mock politicians and celebrities, the town is decorated for days, and thousands of people dress up. The best-known tradition is the matrafonas: men dressed as women, in wigs and borrowed clothes, filling the streets. Each year the carnival is led by a pair of mock monarchs, the Rei and Rainha, both played by men.
The main parades usually take place on the Sunday and on Carnival Tuesday, in the afternoon. The detailed programme for 2027 is published by the municipality closer to the date.
How to get there from Lisbon
Torres Vedras is about 55 km from Lisbon, around 45 minutes by car. On parade days the centre closes to traffic and the town is packed. With a private driver you arrive without worrying about parking and leave when you have had enough, which on carnival day can be late.

- Óbidos, 30 minutes north, for a quiet morning inside the medieval walls before the carnival afternoon.
- Ericeira, 25 minutes away, the surf village with its fish restaurants, for a late lunch by the sea.

- Costumes are welcome. The more improvised, the more local.
- February evenings can be cold and wet. Bring a layer you do not mind getting confetti on.
