Every June, Lisbon celebrates its popular saints, and the night of 12 June, the eve of Santo António, is the biggest of all. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday, which promises an especially lively night.
What happens
On the evening of the 12th, the Marchas Populares parade down Avenida da Liberdade: each Lisbon neighbourhood presents its own costumes, music and choreography, after months of rehearsal. At the same time, the old quarters, Alfama, Mouraria, Graça and Bica, fill with arraiais, street parties strung with paper garlands, where grilled sardines, bifanas and sangria are served at improvised stalls.
On the 13th, the feast day itself, there is a procession from the Church of Santo António, next to the cathedral. Santo António is also Lisbon's matchmaking saint, and you will see pots of manjerico, small basil plants with a love poem attached, everywhere.
How to plan the night
The centre of Lisbon is closed to traffic on the night of the 12th and the narrow streets of Alfama are packed until late. A private driver makes the difference at both ends of the night: dropping you as close as the closures allow and collecting you at an agreed point when you are done, instead of searching for a taxi at 2 a.m.
A good plan is to start in the late afternoon with a private Lisbon tour, the viewpoints of Graça and Senhora do Monte while the garlands go up, and finish in Alfama for dinner and the party. A certified guide can join for +80€ (half day) or +120€ (full day) per group.
Suggested route
- Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and Graça at sunset.
- Alfama for sardines and the arraiais.
- Avenida da Liberdade for the Marchas, if you want to see the parade.
Good to know
- Seats along the Avenida for the Marchas are limited; the parade is also broadcast live on Portuguese television.
- Pickpockets work the crowds. Keep valuables to a minimum.
- Wear comfortable shoes: Alfama is all steps and cobbles.
